Ever been in a position where multiple people have been bidding for your time? Do you feel like you're being pulled in multiple directions? Or maybe it's just me. I have four kids.

I cannot imagine what it would have been like to have to change four diapers at one time, feeding four kids a bottle at one time. If you know anything about kids, they like that individualized, one-on-one attention. With four, how do you do that? It's hard. When they're all bidding for your time at the same time.

I was fortunate, thank God, that my first three were four years apart, literally. God's doing, not mine. The last one was 11 years later. Now that definitely was God's doing!

I didn't have to change four diapers at one time, which is great and maybe your story is a little bit different, but here's what I know about relationships and even business. You can't build a bunch of relationships effectively at one time.

You have to be able to narrow your focus on a select few so that you can be effective and give them the attention they need while getting the attention you need. This will aid in you building the relationship faster.

Today, I'm going to be sharing with you the benefits of the select few.

FOCUS ON YOUR TARGET MARKET

One of the things you want to do is focus on your target market. You can call it your niche, target market, whatever term, or phrase that works for you. I can't tell you how many times I get people coming to me and they have this long list of NAIC codes, as it relates to government contracting, of what they're going to do. My question is...you do all those different things effectively?

Can you imagine having to build relationships with all those different people in order to get contracts? I have to bring them back to reality. Target market, the select few.

To focus on the select few, you have to identify who's your customer. And that's not 5, 10, 20, 30 different people or agencies. Ideally, it's one that fits a certain characteristic. Now it might be multiple people but they fit the same characteristic.

If you have too many offers that don’t go together, you can't effectively build relationships and perform effectively. It just doesn't work like that. If you have too many, you can't build relationships. There's just not enough of you to go around. I know you may think there is... but it's not.

FOCUSED TIME

It’s difficult to spend focused time on a whole bunch of different people? I gave you the example of four kids. Imagine you trying to target a whole bunch of different customers, agencies, people, industries. How effective will you be? I want you to focus your time.

Tyler Perry said, and this is not word for word quote...it's more effective to water one seed and give it all the water it needs versus dividing the water among a bunch of seeds. Spreading the water will slow your growth process.

If you have two plants and only one bottle of water, and both plants need ALL THE WATER, but you divide the water amongst the two plants because that’s all the water you have. Versus having only one plant, you can give that one plant all of the water. When you do that one plant will prosper and grow. Keep that in mind. Focused time.

VALUE TIME

It's like dating. Dating a few people versus many. The quality time that you spend with people will get you to the end result faster. It will get you to that committed relationship quicker.

I'm not talking about personal relationships, but I'm saying it will get you to a deal faster, a committed business relationship faster.

Choosing the right companies to work for as a subcontractor could definitely keep you fed.

You won't be hungry. When you choose a few companies, you build key relationships with them and good relationships, with the like, know, and trust (LKT) factor. Delivering quality products or quality projects on time and within budget definitely aids in building that LKT factor. Key relationships will keep you fed. Trust me on that one.

As the saying goes, good work is hard to find. You'll hear prime contractors saying that all the time… good work is hard to find.

STEREOTYPES

You don’t want to fit into that stereotype. Make sure you're building good relationships, you're delivering quality products and projects, you're on time doing what you say you're going to do and doing it within budget.

Primes don't like to go over budget because it affects their bottom line profit. We all like to protect our profit line at all costs, and you should too. That's the only way you're going to grow.
