Talk about my eyes about to pop out my head!
It sure felt like they were about to when I’d filed my taxes by the tax extension deadline back in 2009.
Did I read that correctly? Did it say amount owed $153,495.60.
OMG! Stupid, stupid, stupid. That’s me hitting myself upside my head.
I knew better. I should have:
- Filed by the April 15th deadline
- Paid something quarterly
- Better tracked my expenses
- Better categorized my account list vs going with the generic list
- Sheltered my money with tax strategies
- Listened to my CPA sooner
The school of hard knocks is a mother of a teacher. Man did that hurt. Oh, but you can best believe, I plugged that leak quick!!
When you know better you do better.
NAW, when it cost you, you make that change and fix it.
Or maybe that’s just me.
I now…
- Input my transactions DAILY into my accounting system, quickbooks, and see how much money I have
- I reconcile my accounts EVERY MONTH
- Set aside money biweekly for taxes
- Have the categories I need to capture ALL my money – making sure those tax categories are not missed
- Have a financial advisor that I consult with on a quarterly basis
- Listen and take action – quickly
Learn from my lesson. Your money amount might be different but the pain of it remains the same.
You now have the steps make it happen and not continue to be over taxed.
Quit complaining about your tax bill if you’re not willing to do anything about it.
It’s not too late to at least minimize your tax liability for this year, but you sure don’t have a lot of time.
You can keep going at it alone and keep getting the same results. Just get out your checkbook!
